Closed Cell Spray Foam Insulation has the best air sealing properties of any insulation product currently available. It is applied as a liquid on walls, ceilings, or any surface so that the material penetrates all the nooks and crannies. The material expands before setting up, creating an air-tight seal that is virtually impenetrable to moisture.
Although windows, doors, and outside walls contribute to air leakage, the biggest holes are usually hidden from view and connect the house to the attic, crawlspace, or basement. Duct work and plumbing chases, attic accesses, recessed light fixtures, and wiring through the top plates of walls are all examples of connections between conditioned and unconditioned air spaces.
In addition, air filtration can also occur where individual pieces of the building structure are joined, such as where sheathing is attached to two-by-fours, and around door and window installations. This causes even professionally installed insulation to have an effective R-Value of less than the insulation’s R-Value rating. In fact, research performed at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory research showed that "perfectly installed" batts with an R-Value of 19 provided an average effective R-Value of less than 16. The average R-Value dipped as low as 11 for a wall where the insulation was installed with rounded shoulders and pushed in place without being cut to properly fit around wiring and electrical boxes*.
Tripod Insulation and Solar uses Demilec Heatlok Soy® polyurethane foam. It yields a high R-Value and minimizes air and moisture infiltration. The material by sprayed on allowing for exceptional air sealing properties. When properly applied, it keeps the outside out, and the inside in… contributing to a more energy efficient and healthier building. As a bonus, when used exclusively, the rigid nature of this insulation can increase the overall structural integrity of a building.
Closed-cell polyurethane foam can be used exclusively, or in combination with batts and loose-fill insulation products. Contact Mark for a free energy audit and to learn how spray foam insulation from Tripod Insulation and Solar can save you money on your energy bill.
