Solar Water Heating

One of the most popular applications of solar energy is for heating water.  For typical homes, a modern residential solar water-heating system can significantly reduce the need for heating water by conventional means.  It minimizes the use of electricity or fossil fuel to heat the water and reduces the home’s carbon footprint.

Most industry experts estimate that from 40 to 80 percent of the average household's demand for hot water can be provided using solar energy.  Of course, results vary based on climate conditions, the type of system installed, and the overall and peak household demands for hot water.  But most solar water-heating systems pay for themselves in four to seven years and continue to provide hot water for many additional years.

Under Floor Radiant Heating

You can take solar a step further with solar powered under floor radiant heating.  We’ve been working with Radiantec, a leading name in solar heating industry for 30 years, to implement radiant heating systems.

In floor radiant heating systems are efficient, environmentally friendly, and comfortable.  They are a reliable and affordable way to harness the sun and lower your home’s dependence on traditional fossil fuels.

Many people mistakenly think that solar energy is only practical in warm, sunny climates.  Solar heating systems have been effectively implemented in places like Buffalo and Seattle, cities known for their cloudy weather.

All you need is a place to hang several solar collection panels that the sun usually shines on during the hours of the day when the sunlight is at it’s most intense (generally 9am-3pm).  Each panel is about the size of a sheet of plywood and can be mounted in a variety of places other than your building’s roof.  Panels can be mounted on a detached building or ground mounted and landscaped to act as a privacy fence.

Best yet, residential solar energy installations qualify for a tax credit of up to 30% under the federal government’s tax credit for energy efficient improvements (Learn more).  This credit is good on all solar energy improvements through December 31, 2016.

Contact us if you’d like to learn more about using solar energy to heat your hot water, or to learn about any of the other solar energy products we install.
